Sn Blends ~ Snowflake Rhyme and Activities for 4K, Speech and Language and Kindergarten Intervention Groups

Many students in our Kindergarten intervention group have significant speech and language issues as well.  It makes sense to target these areas as we develop phonemic awareness.

It is also best practice to keep activities engaging!  We have two Kindergarten groups with four students in each group for 25 minutes daily each.  They love these activities!

The poem is presented two ways. The first is in a written poem format.

Concept of Word and print matching is crucial.  Kids have to touch each dot as they say the poem to practice this skill.
Practice onset and rime using the snowflake cut-outs.  Students place one snowflake below the word for the "sn" blend and one snowflake for the rime pattern.
Sprinkle in a little number identification using tens frames. For students who struggle greatly, use the snowflake manipulatives to help with one-to-one correspondence.

Dice games are amazing.  Roll the dice and whatever word matches has a marker placed over the top.  (We use sparkly pom-poms for this activity.) You will practice "sn" blends 18 times before you finish these  games!  These same games are also in my snowman rhyme pack.

Here are few darling books to integrate into this unit:

Personal Narrative Writing Checklist ~ Grades 4-8

We are writing personal narrative stories in grades four and five right now.  The part that teachers "bemoan" is editing for ideas as well as punctuation and spelling.  Our fifth grade team decided to edit using color coding for each area.

We underlined:
The hook in pink,
The events in blue,
The conclusion in red,
The lesson learned in purple,
Sensory words/adjectives in green.

Next steps:  Editing with paper and pencil areas that need "beefing up."  To be continued...

I uploaded this as a freebie on TPT.  Give it a go and please leave me feedback.

A Chubby Little Snowman Rhyme: Concept of Word, Phonemic Awarness, Early Literacy and Speech & Language Activities

Happy New Year!

We are back to work tomorrow and like every other teacher, I am cramming to be ready for beautiful students tomorrow.  The paraprofessional that works with me has two new phonemic awareness groups and I have oodles of great activities planned for her using The Chubby Little Snowman rhyme.

These activities include:
  • Concept of Word print matching
  • Substitution of initial sounds for words that end in long o
  • A dice  game for working with sn blends
  • An "I have, who has?" game for working with long ow word
As always, the best way to "cement" new skills is through engaging activities and I think these will motivate our early learners!

If you have never heard this rhyme, here you go!

Update:  We played Blizzard Blackout today with pom-poms.  They were a little too light, but the kids had fun.  I am going to get marshmallows and give them a try tomorrow for our "snow" pieces!

This is the PERFECT snowman book to go with this unit...totally darling! Check it out.
