High Rise Private Eyes: The Case of the Missing Monkey by Cynthia Rylant

Our second grade team has been steaming through mysteries, engaging students, "cementing" learning and having a blast!

We started with Nate the Great and ended with The High Rise Private Eyes~both series are PERFECT for second grade readers!

Our teachers and students became quite involved and excited about learning the vocabulary to mysteries, "close reading" parts for text evidence and even made super sleuth and magnifying lenses to "focus" their skills~absolutely delightful and everything was best practices in teaching kids!

Here are my favorites for the week:
FREE elements of a mystery anchor charts.  I am still looking for the original source.

There is no better time to introduce making inferences, than with a mystery unit!  We spend a lot of time finding the "perfect" anchor chart.  The one below was originally located {here}.

INSANELY cute sleuth hats to wear while close reading and investigating for clues...

Close reading anyone???

I created a 23 page unit for The Case of the Missing Monkey that is CCSS aligned and focuses on shades of meaning, Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, story structure, and inferencing.  Click the cover below if you are interested in looking at this further!
