Labeling in Early Literacy ~ Apple Time!

Labeling charts and graphics is crucial to the development of early literacy.  Labeling allows student to categorize and regroup new vocabulary in a manner that is developmentally appropriate, yet functional.  As students learn new words through labeling, their "schema" (knowledge base) extends, regroups and grows.

Kindergarten teachers and students have been working on labeling the parts of an apple.  Art always "cements" new ideas.  Here are a few pictures of these great projects:

Categorization also occurs through using our senses in the primary grades.  Kindergarten students used their senses to describe how apple see, taste, feel, look and smell.  This is the beginning of understanding Adjectives.
